Dungeons of Fayte Review

Pros: Very nice presentation, simple controls and gameplay, great potential to be sold, and a great replay value

Cons: Controls can get very cramped with 4 people

Dungeons of Fayte

Graphics and Sound - 5/5
The graphics and sound in the game made it feel like an authentic old rpg. There is little to say about them other than they are simple, go together perfectly, and just work for this particular game. You should play the updated version, however, since the non-blurred graphics look much nicer.

Gameplay - 4/5
The gameplay in DoF is very simple. You move your character with arrow keys, a joystick, or the mouse, attack with button 1, and use your special ability with button 2. The different special abilities and the archer class add some nice variety to how the game can be played. There are no real flaws with the gameplay, but it does get a little repetitive and routine after a while. There is a lot more to DoF than the actual combat, however, so this does little to take away from the overall experience.

Story - 4/5
The story in this rpg is very interesting. Aside from the fact that you have 4 months to prepare for a fight with the Bone Lord, there is no set story. All of the details are narrated as the characters choose what to do during their months of preparation, the choices made in random events and encounters in the various dungeons, and the bit at the end about what happened to each character after they either triumphed over the Bone Lord or were defeated. The story is never the same, and all the details and narrations make your choices all the more interesting to make and all the more funny when you do something stupid.

Interface - 4/5
The controls were very simple, and work great with two or even three people. There are several problems here, however. The joystick controls are much harder to use, and the alternative when playing with 4 people is to all huddle around the keyboard which can be very uncomfortable. This can be solved by using two keyboards(Requires one that plugs into a usb port, but they can both work at the same time on my computer. I've no idea how many people will be able to get that to work for them, however.), so it wasn't a problem for me but may be for other people. There isn't much that can be done about this, except online play with friends, although I'm not sure the problem of making sure the game still ran well and didn't lag would be worth the work required for this. Since the control problem doesn't get in the way of enjoying the game(and I might be one of the few who don't like the joystick controls), this flaw is also fairly minor.

Glitches
The game has a very glitches that I would like to mention. When teleporting into one of the enemy encounters where the exits are sealed off, one player got stuck in a tree. I think this was in the forest, but I'm not positive, might have been the Waysteland. The second is that there seems to be a problem with the magic classes. With both the adept and sorcerer, charging the spell seemed to make the controls of the other character unresponsive and it can really disrupt gameplay(this may just be the keyboard and not the game as you said). The last glitch was in the Underwyrld, where as a barbarian I noticed I took 10 damage several times when I walked on land several tiles away from the lava. I have no idea why this happened.

Potential
Dungeons of Fayte seems almost like a demo to me. The game is very well designed and extremely fun to play over and over again, and playing it with friends is a blast. It seems too small, however. This is strictly my opinion, but the game seems like it could be expanded, with 12+ dungeons to explore, more classes, and a lot more added events, to make it a sellable game. The game is undoubtedly good enough to sell, it only lacks length. Adding more dungeons, classes, enemies, and events to the game of the same quality as the rest of it would make it last a person for many play-throughs without coming close to discovering everything in the game. The game really has great potential to be sold, if it were just longer than it is now, although it would be hard to make it twice the size it currently is without keeping it of the same quality, so I can see why you wouldn't want to do that. I have no idea what plans you had for it, but I hope you consider expanding it and making some money off of your hard work.

Overall - 5/5
I loved the game and must have played it 5 or 6 times now. It was fantastic and none of the problems/glitches I have mentioned really got in the way of it being an incredibly fun game to play. The only thing I think it needs is more content, which would make it's already great replay value 5 times what it is now. But then again, this is only a testament to the fact that it is a very well done, high quality game. If you went ot the trouble of reading this entire review then please give it a try.
