RPG Space Invaders Review
By Alticurus on 14 October 2010

Pros: RPG elements work well here, enemies had variety.

Cons: Coding was obviously very simple, sounds and graphics were ripped and/or default

A decent mixture of 2 game genres.

Maybe not the best RPG shooter, but it's okay.

Graphics: 3/5
From what I saw, they were either ripped (that's fine for the Space Invaders sprites, though) or they came as default sprites from Game Maker examples (e.g. the player's bullet). A lot of default drawing functions were used too, and that might not be the best call... But everything at least fit the theme, and that's mostly what counts.

Sound: 3/5
The music, I'm assuming, is not yours. That's not much of a problem for a game of this caliber, though... but it's only one track. Even though it sounds fine, it's still nice to have some variety. Some sound effects weren't of very good quality, like the player shooting sound (it also came default in the 'Sounds' folder)... Although, like I said with the graphics, a good number of them were alright, and at least they fit the theme.

Gameplay: 4/5
Adding RPG elements to a game as plain and simple as Space Invaders, admittedly, is a fantastic idea. The internal HP, EXP, and Level Up system works perfectly. But some enemy attacks would still connect and deal full damage even if it had almost completely faded away, you could never collect the EXP items from the last enemy killed, and some other little flaws... Nevertheless, though, it was interesting and somewhat fun to play.

Story: N/A

Interface: 4/5
The problem here is the use of many of the default functions for things like drawing text and health. The EXP required would begin to go off-screen after you reached a certain level, the health bars were never centered, and they also used the tacky default color-changing technique as health dropped. Nonetheless, everything still worked fine and this category doesn't suffer as much as some others might have.

Overall: 4/5
Maybe not the best adaptation of a vertical shooter with RPG elements, but it's not half bad and certainly doesn't have any HUGE flaws. Taking into consideration that this is probably one of the first games you've made, 4 stars sounds about right.
