Ninja Penguin Review
By Turtles on 19 May 2010

Pros: Great 3D and 2D Mix, great combat(Even with the limitations!), great sound, great story, 2 paths...

Cons: Only the lack of buttons-but that was a competition rule...

What is almost a perfect game

Ninja Penguin is a great action/adventure game where you control a ninja penguin. You are greeted with a nice tutorial where you learn how to play, but sadly, you can not skip it.

The emperor is searching for warriors to hire them as protectors of his snow machines and you are chosen for the job. The emperor wants to build snow machines on an island so it can be habitable by the penguins. But, some penguins are against him... The snow he will make will cause other animals unable to live there... Those penguins ask you to join them and from here, you can choose 2 paths to follow in the rest of the story: Serve the emperor, or the penguins against him.

Due to the competition rules, you can only use 1 action button, but the developer has still managed to make it really great! Basically, you perform a sword slash by pressing the Space Bar. But that is not all! You can also do a 3 Hit combo and double tap a direction to get into lock on mode where at a far distance from the enemy you can throw shurikens. Also a great addition is the Ying Yang gauge which is like a special moves bar... When you defeat a special enemy he will offer you a power and if you do not accept it you will never be able to pick it up again. There is also an upgrade store where you can buy performance upgrades with snowflakes you can find around the areas. The game provides a nice variety of 3D gameplay with a mixture of really great 2D graphics(Sometimes 3D, too).
The only problem I personally have with this game is that the game can sometimes feel clumsy and the lock on mode can activate and deactivate even if you don't want it sometimes, but that is only because of the competition rules. Those flaws aside though, this is almost a perfect GM game.
*It is my competition favourite and I would have given it the first place award.
