graphics: [C]
i highly suspect most of the graphics to be taken from either free resources or ripped. even so, they are pretty detailed and MOST the levels are laid out correctly. the first two areas looked pretty bad though. the designs weren't very realistic however...
there didn't seem to be much animation. the boxes that broke apart just simply changed directly into another image.
the character didn't fit the tiles' style at all, not to mention the animation on it was pretty rough.
because of the programming, collisions looked awful and objects didn't slide the way you'd imagine they would...
sound: [C]
nice sounds overall but the absence of any background music made the game a little empty, or boring. no matter what type of game it is, background music is always possible.
gameplay: [C]
while the puzzles were simple they were pretty entertaining... but the programming makes the interaction frustrating. boxes never slide the way you need them to, climbing ladders not only looked bad but controlled bad as well. attacking was so short ranged and strange it wasn't fun at all.
the jumping was one of the worst parts of the gameplay, certain background objects effected the jumping greatly. if you were standing on a door and jumped, you would jump twice as high. this is because the programmer tested for any objects instead of just solid ones... it doesn't look very good...
combat was really bad, as the player and enemy constantly get knocked down and it's a real struggle to get back up and attack once again.
Story: [D]
the introduction is so short with no cut-scene at all. just a few short lines of text. not to mention you don't start off in a room that looks anything like an apartment. nothing seems to fit the idea of being in a city or in apartments. there wasn't much effort in setting the environment.
the idea of an impact and being becoming aggressive doesn't fit right, and why only the main character is sane doesn't make much sense either.
Interface: [C]
the programming seems like it was a struggle to make... it is obvious that the programmer lacks experience. the excessive jumping, the bad collisions, pushing objects and climbing ladders... reacted horribly. more time must be put in, time to iron out every possible bug. learning new methods to smooth things out. this is what needed to be done...
as for the controls, they were simple enough and easy to understand. after all, there was only one button anyway.
OVERALL: [C-]
just barely based as average. it's really hard to imagine that a team of people resulted in this game. it is very UN-professional in many ways. it feels more like an early beta then a complete version. my advice to the developers is to learn from your mistakes and correct them.

....No one ever gets to the ending, because of all the problems in the rest of the game.
I was a little out of my element in this concept, and my lack of programming skills only made things more difficult. This time around on my new concept, I'm trying to find people who can make up for our weaknesses like good artists and programmers, and my new story will be much different from this one, it will be told in a more active way.
Thanks for the review though

...Thats why the bugs that exist were still there. As for the story, I had a lot of ideas for story, I just had a hard time telling the story with no one else in the game to talk to. I wanted the character to be totally isolated, so for the most part, at the end of every act was about the only time I could give the characters introspective thoughts about what he had encountered, plus the only cutscenes come in the final act, which explain everything, unfortunately....

...unfortunately, that didn't work out, because I didn't make up for it with good sound effects, because I didn't have enough people getting me resources. The graphics I used were indeed the Google random crapola formula, because no one on the team is any good at art, at least in the capacity to create all custom sprites. The debugging was a problem too, since I would spend hours and hours trying to figure out what was causing a bug and could never really figure it out....

Yeah, I am still very inexperenced as a programmer, this was the best of my programming so far, but it was still a mess. The team is very casual, I'm the only person who actually knows game maker in any capacity beyond the very basics, everyone else either just helped with ideas or gave some other contributions, like a couple of sprites and the music. The reason there was no music was because I wanted to create that feeling of being alone and that emptyness....
