The Ultra Mission Review
By Feryl on 18 August 2010

Pros: Quick, fun and challenging gameplay, nice graphical effects, well-chosen music.

Cons: Very basic victory screens, not extremely fresh or new.

To a basic degree, it is Ultra.

Cactus, eccentric but talented game making machine, takes players on another noteworthy Game Maker ride with The Ultra Mission, a basic run-and-gun style shooter with a couple gimmicks and fair amount of challenge. The basic mission you're tasked with is to rescue civilians and shoot the bad guys, being careful not to fling grenades into the nearest innocent bystander in the process. If you cause a civilian to meet an early demise instead of saving him, you'll have to restart the current level over again, same as when you're shot by the soldiers, turrets and the like which roam the half-overhead-angled rooms.

The WASD keys are used for movement and the two mouse buttons fire your gun and grenades, which must be used to defeat the various enemies who would hinder your quest and shoot you at a minute's notice. Stealth is forced upon the player early on, as one must hide behind walls before exposing oneself to turrets for a brief moment long enough to shoot them. This feature gradually becomes more challenging, as civilians are also placed next to walls which must be exploded with grenades--shooting a wall with a civilian standing next to it counts the same as a death to your character.

The Ultra Mission lasts for around only eight levels, so the challenge itself is what mainly contributes to the already short playing time. The graphics are nice and clean, with an angled-overhead presentation and some nice explosion effects. The music is fairly well chosen and suits the game fine.

If you're craving a nice, short and fun arcade experience, give Cactus' Ultra Mission a shot. Although it's basic, you shouldn't be disappointed.
