Core (by Ideaz) Review
By Turtles on 11 September 2010

Pros: Catchy style, nice level design, pro levels, a lot of levels in total, a lot to do to 100% it...

Cons: Controls can feel weird, cheap traps can wait for you after hard portions of a level, a lot of the They Need To Be Fed presentation style is in the game...

Probably a candidate for a place

Core is a really nice game and probably a candidate to win. It is a nice platform game with a lot to keep you busy. The menus are presented very nicely, but they almost feel like the They Need To Be Fed ones... Speaking of which, you collect gems that look very similar to the ones in Maru's adventure... There is also a great replay feature. You can save up to 5 level replays. After completing a level, you will get to the end screen, where you will see your final score and show a replay. You also get medals depending on your score. There is 1 gem in each level and they can be tricky to get. Speaking of tricky, there are the pro levels to keep you busy even further. The game is full of levels, so there is a huge replayability factor. And if you are a gaming psycho like me, then you can collect all gold trophies by beating all levels in a really short time. You can choose to display the controls for PSP/PC or both which is nice.
You control a small weird character with the arrow keys. You can use Up or Space to make it jump. Moving feels a bit weird, since you kinda slide... You can also wall jump, and unlike in most of the other games with such an ability granted to the player, you can keep going up with only 1 wall, whereas in many other games like Jumper 2, you need 2 walls. The controls can feel a bit weird before you get used to them, but the main problem is that it can be hard to get through a tiny space since you kinda slide as I mentioned with all the traps nearby... There are a lot of traps, ranging from spikes and flame throwers to lasers and bullet/homing missile launchers. The goal is to actually get to the bottom, so you can't die by falling, you will actually win. There are also other gameplay elements, such as launch ramps, doors that open with keys and teleporters. The launch ramps can be placed in the air however, and this is a little presentation flaw. The air launch ramps should look differently, because they look weird without ground below them. Both the Normal and Pro levels have 3 sectors, each with their own background. The game gets harder and harder as you progress. There are 2 things that can be cheap though... One is that the movement sliding can be annoying and can lead you to your demise. The second mistake, is that sometimes after beating a hard portion of a level and you jump down, spikes can await you. You will probably expect that it is the end of the level, but no, you will be in for quite a surprise.
To top all those levels and gems to collect, you get unlockable extras such as extra hats and a minigame.
The story is that you jump in some hole, trying to reach the mysterious core. As you progress through the sectors, you get deeper and deeper into the core. The story is just an excuse for the theme really, so this is the only thing that could prevent the game from winning.
Overall, this is a really great game, and one of my favourites to win. Good luck!

Scores:
Gameplay: 8.2/10 //Nice level design, but it can sometimes be a bit cheap. The wall jumping is great, though the movement sliding can be weird.
Design: 10/10 //There are so many easy Normal and harder Pro levels, as well as cool menus and even a recording feature. A lot of medals and gems to collect.
Graphics: 8.6/10 //The game looks great, simple, but much like "They Need To Be Fed", simple is better here.
Story: 5/10 //It's just an excuse for the theme really...
Music: 8/10 //Good sound effects, but there is only one background music, which is nice, but gets repetitive.
Presentation: 10/10 //Excellent menus, great recording feature... It feels a bit like in TNTBF though...
Overall: 9.2/10
Overall Rating: 5/5

Hello lucky number 2. I have decided that this is a pretty good review. The scores at the end don't exactly make sense. For example 5/10 for story even though, like you yourself said, the story doesn't make much sense. What kind of story does it take to get a 4 or a 3 etc? Just sayin' having well defined standards prevents you from accidentally over rating something and feeling bad about it later. Still I gave this review a thumbs up. I do recommend using more small paragraphs.
