Super Mario Bros: Dual Dash Review
By MacflyX on 15 July 2008

Pros: Playing with 2 characters at the same time, great music and graphics as usual

Cons: Split screen hide the view, controls are not easy to master, minor bugs and glitches

Teamwork is not easy

So Wart team up with Bowser to terminate the Marios. Great. Now, Mario and Luigi must stop them. Their only powers are the "pick up and throw" attack just like SMB2 and their "head springs". When one jumps on the other's head, he can jump higher. They can also stomp some enemies.

Having to play with both Mario and Luigi was a great idea. They have to find their ways through the levels. They often need each other to advance and that's the hard part. We have to control one and control the other at the same time. Not an easy task but with pratice, we get them to work together. Going through the levels is not easy but it is highly feasible. The challenge come when the Marios have to battle against bosses. Both Mario and Luigi have to avoid eggs and magic from Birdo or simply the boss himself. This is hard. Defeating Wart and Bowser at the end is really tough. Fortunately, we have to fight them one after the other...

The little window to the left showing the brother when he is far is interesting but it blocks some of the view of the brother that has the focus. Just switching from brother to brother would have been enough if you ask me.

As for the little bugs, they are minor and don't seem to affect gameplay. For example, sometimes, when Mario is against a wall, he can't jump. Moving away from the wall solve the problem. No big deal here. One weird glitch I found was on Bowser's castle. When a bro get killed in the level (not by the boss), the boss battle music ensues and if we toggle to the other bro's view, we go directly to Wart's room. Weird but it's a detail. One more thing. The life counter don't seem to work. I got killed several times but the counter never seemed to be affected. It only goes up.

This game got me hooked. I love it! Another great work from Hello.

There's another glitch. If one bro finishes and the other dies, it gets stuck and you have to restart.
