Swerve Review

Pros: Charming 3-D graphics and sounds, Nice selection of cars

Cons: Level design, Collision detection, Music seems misplaced

No Parking Fine for Swerve!

I'm surprised that in the game details, Game Fortress, the creator of Swerve, makes apologies for the graphics. I have no problem with the graphics, they're are decent and charming, and the cars look great. Whilst Swerve looks fantastic, the graphics cover several obvious flaws in the gameplay.
First of all the collision detection needs work, I found that I could simply drive through some cars. Secondly, the level design needs some work on; the ramps the player uses to achieve heights seem very out of place amongst the cityscape, even awkward. They rise above the ground on seemingly invisible stilts and the other cars just ignore them. And lastly, while I enjoy the James Bond music it seems a bit strange to have it playing all the time, while I crash into a wall or another car, without being able to turn it off.
But despite by critiscism, Swerve is a very good attempt at a 3D racer. With a bit of work here and there, it could soon resemble the 'Driver' games whose gameplay I used to love.
That Swerve could so easily be a great race game and more is a tantilising thought indeed.
