Halo Revolution V.04 Review
By mman36 on

Pros: True to Halo, weapons from the game, music, VEHICLES, detailed (if ripped) graphics
Cons: Sometimes hard to know where to go, dialogue isn't Halo-y, Chief's torso detached from legs, grammar
Halo without the Xbox
Last time I reviewed this game (ver.03???) it had a bland menu, even worse dialogue, and the Chief was a pussy. Scott has made great strides since the last version. Beautiful menu, improved (but still not Halo) dialogue, less difficult to know where to go, and the soundtrack glitches have been fixed.
However, problems still plaque this game and keep it from being the gem it has the potential to be. First, how hard it is to find that code for the door. A little more obvious please. A good choice for things like that is not to have a small sprite on the ground but instead, how bout a console the Covenant are guarding? The player will kill the enemies, and see the console, which must be important. This keeps the player in the action, instead of wandering looking for something while nothing's going on. However, it's not a good idea to send relentless enemies while hte player searches either. This creates frustration-"I can't find this thing, I'm almost dead, and there's still more enemies I have to deal with."
My second major bitch is the dialogue. While Scott has improved it greatly since last time, it still doesn't right "chief" to me. I know I've said this before but when youre doing a licensed title, its important to have consistancy. I have never in the Halos heard Johnson say "I don't know what they speak of." EVER. THe key is to take existing dialogue from Halo, and modify it for your game. This will keep it true to form, and it won't sound like Johnson had a sex change. Also, Covenant should be capitalized. Again, another stupid thing, but every little detail counts, especially when dealing with a franchise as big as Halo.
I know it sounds like I'm bitching, this game is amazing-a must play. But the problems are of moderate size, and fixing them should be a top priority. This is what comes to mind when someone says "Halo for Gameboy" or "Homemade Halo". It FEELS like Halo, but the dialogue pulls the player out of the immersion, as does hunting around for a stupid key card or password. Never in Halo do you do that. It's important to be original while still in the context of your license, but think. Put your idea into the "real" game. Imagine what it would be like to play it. Imagine you've just killed 2 Hunters at the end of Halo, and are ready to blow up the Autumn. Now, hunt around the ship for a key card, sitting on the floor, smaller than a plasma pistol. It bogs down the action.
The graphics may be ripped, but they are consistant enough to flow and look good. Buildings match up with buildings, characters match characters. The guns look great. When it comes down to it, gameplay over graphics, although these graphics are bright and pretty to look at.
Finally, I'd like to wrap up with the good in the game. Gameplay is Halo-all the way. Chief is a bad ass-as long as he doesn't speak. The Warthog is fun-though you cant run people over, the physics are good too. Graphics are pretty to look at and augment the gameplay, and are detailed.
Scott-your getting close to the golden game-keep it up.
PS-If you need dialogue help, Id be happy to assist.

everything for the next version, but once that's done i will add more things, and will correct them to the littlest detail so that i dont have to go back and fix them later.
Thankyou so much for that review, you spoke so much truth, and i have taken in all of what you said. I will be sure to fix up hopefully all of that, so that this game gets even closer to that 'Golden-Game'.
I'll PM you about the diaglog, thankyou so much!

I'd much rather be fighting off hunters while dodging their furious green blast. As for the diaglog, it lets the game down a lot. I would love some help with it, and you sound like you know what you're talking about, so im asking you. Would you join with me and help me with the dialog? I really struglle with it. Im glad that you like the physics and gameplay, im trying to get most of the engine done before rushing in and adding more levels. As i said before, im focusing on fixing and improving

Omg Thankyou so much for that very long and interesting review. It must have taken you like 10 mintues to write that lol Anyway, i appreciate every little detail that you mentioned. So that you know, for V.05 i am focusing on 'fixing/improving', instead of maknig more. I am updated every graphics, so that it looks heaps better, and trust me, it already is by a long way. I have fixed the password card thing, and i 100% agree with you, it's boring having to go around looking for it. + MORE
