Dragonball Z Rumble Review
By Yal on 24 March 2011

Pros: More moves and combos than you may expect!

Cons: Some graphic elements of different styles feel mashed together.

Pretty promising fangame!

I remember back in the days when Dragonball was "dah shit": everyone read it, everyone shot hadoukens at each other, everyone wanted to learn Japanese instead of French or German. Dragonball was the first manga that reached the west, and thus the first manga that reached Sweden. Sadly, Game Maker was nearly unknown back then, and even so, GM5 was the most recent version. There came no Dragonball fangames.

Nowadays, YYG is swamped with Naruto and/or Leech fangames, but the Dragonball fangames are rare and often poorly done. This is when you find this sparkling gem.

Dragonball Z Rumble features similar gameplay to the SNES brawl dragonball games: put simply, envision Super Smash Bros. in 2D with sprites that was frikkin' THIS TALL *lifts hand this much above keyboard*. Beautyful graphics, complex control schemes that let you do anything... you name it.

The Graphics: 4/5
A lot of good ol' sprites makes their comeback, bundled with vivid menues. The con is that some menues and some effect sprites look like they come from a different game and doesn't blend in well; however, that doesn't happen far too often. It's pretty acceptable. The backgrounds are pretty cool, too, although the (ripped) sprites are the best graphic thing about this game. I really liked that some animations was ripped frame for frame and looked really fluid: a lot of fangames just rip two frames or so, resulting in a quite clunky animation.

Sound: 3/5
Not much to say here - I'm not really a fan of this style of music. It does its job quite well, even though it feels like it could be rearranged a bit. I'd recommend the JAZZ Midi Sequencer to remix midi files - search the "Resources" page on YYG to find it - it's original site is dead, but I've uploaded the trial version to YYG (its licence allows that).

Gameplay: 5/5
This is where the game really shone - the gameplay. You'd think you'd just be able to punch, kick, and fire kamehamehas at your enemies, but it's far more complex than that. There's a lot of combos to use, and there's also some hidden ones that aren't in the menu. Quite fun, and it feels like one could spend a long time at the game to learn them all. Bonus points for the menu ripped from Super Smash Bros' training mode.

Story: 3/5
There's a story in Story mode, but it feels a bit complex if you haven't been in touch with Dragonball for some time - there's a lot of characters getting introduced quite quickly.

Interface: 4/5
Not entirely consistent, but quite decent. I experienced some problems with holding up+left and attacking, but that could be keyboard specific. I figure this game would be awesome with a gamepad. The HUD (boss HP bar in particular) could also be arranged in a more symmetric way.

Overall Rating: 4/5
Play it. You'll like it nearly as much as you'd like my games. And I'm pretty sure and1blitz will be able to make it even better before it's complete.

Yeah the enemy Hp HUD does seem annoying on the screen. For the game-play the moves are all available for viewing, none secret. The music is from Newgrounds but there from various styles. I tried to make a RockNRoll music theme, none of which is dbz though with the exception of the sounds. I thought of implementing the controls onto the game-pad but it would be tedious and I don't have a game pad to test if the controls correspond to game pad.
