Stranded CR Review

Pros: graphics, sound department, reminiscent of a DOS classic
Cons: control layout, can't move and fire at once
Alternative Title: Z-Dogs
- PROS -
- The graphics are nicely done and consistent (except the explosion, which should also have a custom graphic)
- Overall look and feel is very reminiscent of the DOS classic C-Dogs, which is no bad thing.
- Music and sounds, though not original, are used effectively.
- Menu system is straightforward, easy to read, and easy to navigate.
- Fog of war makes exploring the level for important items quite intense, as some monsters invoke a genuine sense of panic.
- CONS -
- The game changes the monitor resolution, which can cause problems for some players. Instead of changing the resolution, make each room's view port size double or triple its size in the room (i.e. 320x320 view ported at 640x640). Has the same effect with fewer side-effects.
- R is for reloading, but you fire with CTRL and turn in place with SHIFT. I know in real life reloading leaves you open to attack, but grouping all the control keys together makes things easier on the hands.
- Firing rate could really be sped up. Reloading should be a little slow, but a double-barreled shotgun can fire both barrels pretty rapidly.
- Grid-based movement might not be the best choice for a game that occasionally requires quick reflexes. At least in C-Dogs you could move 8 directions.
- It'd be really nice if I could fire while moving, instead of having to wait 'til I'm stopped. Or at least speed my dude up a bit more.
- A custom text box would look better than the generic GM textbox. Same goes for the help file.
- I can't kill the helpful humans.
Despite its drawbacks, Stranded is well worth a play. Give it a shot, readers!

Thanks mikemacdee! You really analysed my game thoroughly! I was waiting for some advice like these so that I could go on improving the game. It seems the character's movement can be largely improved, you're not the only one pointing that out. I'm gonna keep all comments in mind for the next release!
