Gui Push: Ice Cavern Puzzle Review
By MaestroRage on 18 December 2007

Pros: - Very sweet and relaxed atmosphere - Easy to understand, can pick up gameplay instantly - Gets quite interesting, puzzles present a real challenge!

Cons: - Keys are not sticky, by that I mean you have to press the direction key repeatedly to go anywhere. - Sound is a tad boring - First 12 levels far too easy.

Some good classic fun!

My first reaction to this game wasn't all that great. I have to be honest, puzzle games are either addicting, or you're constantly looking down on the corner of your screen calculating how much time you've wasted playing the game where you could have wasted it by other tasks, like breathing, or perhaps blinking.

This was not one of those games where you get bored easy. True the gameplay is very simple, but it's simplicity and straight forward attitude is a benefit in of itself. No reading through a PhD thesis on how to operate characters, no thick textbooks to understand the system. Just, walk, push, destroy, move on, rinse hands and repeat.

It's atmosphere is also a plus. The winter theme is clearly present and strongly enforced as was to be entailed for the contest. No hostility of any kind, it's the kind of game you play when you're just looking to relax. Perhaps with some hot chocolate.

The graphics are simple, and though this could be improved, what is there, is effective in it's own means. More like graphics you'd find in Nintendo Gameboy Advanced.

Puzzle games rarely need a story, and the quick fast jump into the game here foregoes all of that. Sure you could learn about Penguin Joe here and why the need to push bricks into delicate machinery is beyond our comprehension, and quite frankly. I don't quite care. As far as i'm concerned we humans have been planting clear pollution creating machines, and they must be destroyed. I blame all you players if the next ice cap melting occurs within the year! Destroy destroy destroy! There is no story here, as far as i'm concerned.

Interface is simple, nothing confusing, nothing new, the way I like my casual games.

The only downfall I found constantly bugging me was the lack of sticky keys. By this I mean you have to click repeatedly the direction arrows to move. As a lazy casual gamer i'm too used to keeping my finger pressed down to get results. There is a slow lag between clicks which make progress sometimes too clunky.

All in all, a good game.

4/6

Thank you very much for the comments and critiques. These will definitely be put into consideration when I work on part 2, which will also include a level editor.
