seiklus Review
By Psychadelic on 30 July 2008

Pros: Astonishingly beautiful graphics. Well-chosen, well-implemented sounds. Simple yet very charming storyline. Straightforward and easily understandable gameplay. Challenging puzzles and interesting hidden clues. Mystic, hypnotizing ambiance.

Cons: Though it feels like the music does fit the game in some way, I still think it works better without it. Without a walkthrough there is a high risk of getting permanently stuck.

This is not a game. This is art.

Seiklus is about a little white character who is seperated from his girlfriend by a meteor. Therefore he must journey all by himself through a huge and lonely world to try and find a way back to her. This seems fairly easy at first but in order to do this, he must collect hundreds of magical glowing orbs and solve varous difficult riddles.

”A masterpiece!”
"It renders me helplessly bored."
”Excellents graphics and Gameplay.”
"It's just an old white stick prancing in grass."
”I LOVE SEIKLUS!”
". . . a very empty and shallow game."

These are some of the things that have been said about Seiklus. It seems that this is the kind of game that you either love or hate. As it is clearly shown above I belong on the love-side.

Personally I think what people need to understand about it, is that this is more of a movie-like experience than a game. The player must agree to be a little more passive than usual and instead try to experience it as a piece of art and not just a silly game that gets boring in the run. If you prepare yourself for another mindless ”Let's go kill some fuckin' zombies!”-game then you are in for a big dissapointment. Because this has so much more to it than just a game. One must try to focus on the great and unique things about it, such as the beautiful graphics, the sweet and innocent storyline, the relaxing effect that it has and most importantly, its extremely charming ambiance. It's like this game belongs on the Louvre and not on YoYo Games with all these ignorant, foolish proletarians who does not understand how fantastic it is.

When I first played this game, I found myself completely hypnotized by the incomparable mystic mood that it has. Following this little guy along his way through these dreamy scenarios and beautiful landscapes, puts me in a trance-like state that is almost therapeutic. There is not much more to say about it. You have to experience it yourself.

One of the things that I love about Seiklus is the fact that the player is left completely on his (or her) own from the beginning. Nothing is explained, nothing is handed over to you, the player is completely helpless. Hell, even the world map is kind of difficult to understand in the beginning. You have to figure everything out by yourself, which in most cases is annoying, but in this game it really works out great! I guess this is one of the things that a lot of people hate about Seiklus, but there is really nothing to hate about it. The game just gets more interesting when you have to use your brain a little.

The one thing about Seiklus that I really don't care for is the music. The first time I played the game, there was some kind of bug that caused the music not to work. And guess what; it was awesome. Walking around in the silence, just listening to the birds, the monster heartbeat and the volcano makes the game even greater. It's kind of the same feeling you get when you walk alone in the forest or on the beach. Your senses are slightly tightened and you find yourself in this dreamy, melancholy state of mind. And yes – I've tried the game with music too. But I am still convinced that the music robs the game of some of its charm. Try it without the music. It's better.

All in all this is one of the games on YoYo that one must try one time or another. Because it's worth the time.
