Pros: -Mario Kart 64's remake by Silent x is an excellent example of how to menuever within a 3D environment.
Cons: -90 degree corners -Character sprites have rough edges -Banana Peels instantly stop your character with no spin animation -Mud piles are essentially banana peels -course backgrounds are unnatractive -avatar designer is finicky -Most sprites look lik
Soften Those Edges, and We'll Have a Great Game
I began playing Silent X's version of Mario Kart 64 with high enthusiasm. the loading screen lets you know that you're going to be playing a 3D game... and once you hit the title screen, your cursor turns into an arrow thtat says 3D. There are many references to the fact that this game is 3D... and it comes off very awkward.
The game starts you out MKDS Style by creating your own player Icon. I thought this was a very nifty add on to the game since you don't see that in many GM games nowadays. Though I ran into some issues, I persisted and began my first race.
If you chose the Mushroom Cup, you begin in Baby park, a small course with hairpin turns and tight spaces; perfect for wasting the competition with items. My first problem lied within the camera. The camera was very close to my character and it made for difficult turns on this course. I often ran into walls upon the tight turns, but this didn't slow me down in the least bit. I enjoyed the race and persisted onto my second race in Luigi circuit.
This was where I realized that things were going to get a little bit difficult. With a little time and practice, these race courses could be very simple to complete, but as a novice to this game, I found frustration here and there.
Granted nearly all courses are this way, it's still a fun game, and appealing to the eye, but it needs more work. Going into 3D also calls for giving up simple backgrounds made in MS paint, and striving for a little more creativity.
I would very much love to see some more work on the GUI. The Main menu is laid out well, but the title text and pointer are a turn off and ruin the appeal.
Play Mario Kart 64... give it a try, but I cant' guarantee it will hold you through all of Silent X's tracks.
All in all. Well done, keep working on this game, you've got GM gold here, it just needs more work.
