Pros: innovative gameplay, simple controls, captivating overall presentation
Cons: simple graphics
Weeee I can't stop spinning!
There are quite a lot of different projects in the Game Maker community. Most have a huge feature list, endless levels and unlockables, some are even MMO. And then there's the other category: The short, casual games. The latter has many shovelware games made in very little time and with not much effort. But sometimes there's a rare gem among those. Yin Yang is such a gem.
Yin Yang is a very simple game to begin with. Your goal is to get the two balls, one white and one black, named Yin and Yang to their respective goals in the level. Every level consists of intertwining black and white paths. The black ball can move in white tunnels but bounces off black tiles and vice versa. But the real charm about Yin Yang is how you control the two balls: You don't. Instead, you rotate the levels and let gravity do the dirty work for you!
While not overly difficult, Yin Yang always offers a challenge to some extent. The balls can fall off the playing field if you're not careful and the twisted paths will sometimes make you balance one ball on the corner of a block while wriggling the other one through a narrow path. It's fun. Simple, almost flashgame-like fun but it really makes you want to play on.
The graphics in Yin Yang are dull to say the least. It has only 3 major colour tones and that's black, white and grey. While the black and white levels fir the game idea very well, it's somewhat disappointing to see the level backgrounds in a monotonous grey all the time. The menus are even worse, featuring only white outlines and text on a black background.
On the other hand: The soundtrack in Yin Yang is really good. It's a laid-back, chillout piece that won't distract you from the game and encourage you to try again, should you fail. While there are no soundeffects in this game, they don't really appear to be missing. This game doesn't need sound effects.
The controls are simple. You got a "rotate right" and a "rotate left" key which will turn the whole level in a direction and change gravity accordingly. That's all there is and that's all that is needed. Nuff said.
Closing comments
Yin Yang is a cool game for your quick puzzle itches. It has a nice gameplay idea, isn't overloaded with unneeded unlockables and just plays well. While it won't win any awards for game length or epic storytelling, it's a game definitely worth playing. If you play online flash games on a regular basis, be sure to add this one to your collection.
