I just create an "exhaust" object with an animated sprite within a "rocket" object's timer. The sprite animation is just a colored circle that shrinks to a point making the animation look like it's getting smaller. (About 10 frames I think) The exhaust object then destroys itself when the animation of it's sprite completes.
