Void Machina Review

Pros: The visual aspect of the game is near perfect Love the gameplay and inner physics.
Cons: The story is non existant at the moment. Some minor interface issues. Still has no background music, i think it should be included anyway if not it's impossible to evaluate the sound design properly.
Under Development but it can become a GREAT game
Awesome work;
a)Visual Design:
The visual aspect is "almost" (as in 99,99999%) perfect, i specially love the warp effect, i can imagine dreadnaughts coming out of warps at random in the map, it would be visually stunning. The only thing i think that could be fixed has to do with the background.
I understand that the background tries to be realistic, but sometimes it feels too static, maybe if the stars with the depth closer to the sprites level should move a little faster, the speed in between the one of the smallest asteroids and the current speed, it would make the game look way more dynamic.
b)Sound Design:
Very good, the sound of the incomming messages is really neat. Explosions and guns FX are ok. The problem is that without background music, it is impossible to evaluate if the background music interferes with the acustic cues in the game.
c)Gameplay:
Messages are a great tool, and they are a good way to "tutorialize" the game without disrupting the pace to a halt (nothing worse than the endless tutorials, and cut scenes)
I like the continuous space, i discovered that a good strategy to handle the difficult enemy ships was shooting rockets at them from far far away, and the radar made very easy the aiming, i really liked that.
The physics are good, maybe you could add some recoil when using the rockets, that could increase the depth of the gameplay without making the interface too complicated (opens a lot of space for new movement strategies, kinda like the Quake 3 rocket-jumps and the like)
I would love to see a V/S mode between a multitude of players over internet, that would be fantastic.
d) The interface:
Easy to learn, but it has some minnor issues, for example;
-If you don't have a mouse with a scrolling button, you can't change secondary weapons (there should be a button, maybe the spacebar, to change the secondary weapon, people will play the game from laptops, or they wont have a scrolling mouse, i know many friends that don't)
-When navigating the ship using the mouse, I was still "chained" to the keyboard, because to accerate i had to push the "W" key, when i saw the cursor while changing the navigation interface, I tought that if i moved the mouse far away from the ship it would accelerate... and it didn't (having to push the "M" key to view messages is a non issue because it's not an action repeated so much during the game, besides you've got to stop playing to read the message, so theres no need to keep navigating the ship, but being "chained" to the keyboard if navigating with the mouse is just wrong)
But overall it's a great game and i had a lot of fun playing it, but you should give an option to deactivate the no-death mode, that would add replayability value to your demo, in fact it stoped being fun when i got to the last ship and realized that i couldn't die :-p
Good luck, and I want to see more soon!
