Xocotl: God Of Stars Review
By W41DO on 16 March 2008

Pros: Nice 2D meets 3D visuals, clean and simple interface, just a demo, so it'll get better.

Cons: Bare-bones gameplay, no story, sounds, collision detection.

Meh

Well, to be fair, this is just a demo, and I'm entering the competition anyway, so I'm not going to rate it. But from what I've played, this game just doesn't have enough going for it to be an awesome game. It's OK, but it's got it's fair share of problems. Mainly, the most unforgivable and frustrating part of this demo, is the collision detection. Like, it works fine, but it's the items being solid that just gets so annoying. Bushes and little plants being solid puts such a damper on the otherwise solid atmosphere, it's weird. Since there are so many plants scattered all over the place, you can't walk for half a second without crashing into something, and not know where it is, the try getting around it, only to have to backtrack to go around it. Plus, since bullets can't travel through little bushes, the enemies get stuck between barriers trying to chase you, and the bullets just dissapear, so it's the game's most annoying problem. The second most annoying problem is the animations to shoot your staff/sword. It takes forever to get through the animation to shoot your gun, and it makes the game feel really slow. But, that's an easy one for the creator to fix, so It's ok. Also worth noting, the enemies are slow, but pretty cool. I guess I like the enemies, but if the creator can speed them up and give them more life, then speed up the shooting, this game could feel really cool, with a frenetic pace and fast action. Also worth noting, the graphics are nice, and definitely have a nostalgic feel, like an old-school SNES game or something, and the atmosphere delivers, with a beautiful ancient world to roam around in. Aside from the problems I've mentioned, some innovation in the weapons would really make this game awesome, since weapons are your main tool in an FPS. So, overall, a solid effort, but needs improvement.

I see what you mean.... I tried to clean that up in the full version. You should be able to pass through most plants like grass and ferns. But you still can pass through mini trees and bushs. Also you can shoot through bushs and now enemies can walk through some bushs too. Thank you HEAPS for you input your really helped. :D
