Viking Bazooka Bloodbath Review
By CJ Master on
09 June 2008
Pros: Excellent old-school graphics, semi-unique and very fun game play, catchy tune.
Cons: Story doesn't have much going for it.
Set's a high standard for Old-school games.
Whoever gave that Viking a bazooka...
Viking Bazooka Bloodbath an old-styled game, and at the time of the writing the reviewer believes that this game will at least get honorable mention, and probably 3rd place. What's so special about this game? Read on...
Graphics 6/6:
This game is obviously doesn't have any eye-candy or great special effects. Why the high score then? Because, all of the graphics fit. Perfectly. They we're probably all made by the same artist, which really shows and is very crucial to a old-school game. You won't see anything that you wouldn't in an arcade machine a few years ago.
No noticeable lag was from this game, and all the graphics fit perfectly. The graphics get a perfect score.
Sound 5/6:
Sound effects we're excellent. Everything seemed to fit, from the bazooka to the knife swinging. Only thing that stood out is that the knife sound effects started to wear on my ears after a while. Sounds themselves get a 5/6.
As for music. The music was, again, excellent. It was a very catchy tune that fit in very well with the game. (It sounded like a MOD file.) The only complaint here is that there's only one track, which unfortunately brings it down a point. Music gets a 5/6.
Both the sound effects and the music was above average, but not perfect. This category gets a superb score.
Gameplay 6/6 (11/12):
Ah ha, the meat and potatoes for any game. (Which is why I especially weigh on it during reviews.) This is where VBB shines.
You use the arrow keys to move your viking, and Z/X to attack. One attack is your close range attack, it's quick and gets enemy's away from you. If you just press it then your character will do a super-fast and spamable attack. Hold up or down to have the viking to jump in the air and slam back down, or hold the right/left keys while pressing it and your viking will move forward while attacking.
This creates many strategies, all of which you'll need to take advantage of in close-combat in order to survive.
Press the Bazooka key however, and you'll (wait for it...) use your bazooka! Like the close combat attacks, different arrow keys do different attacks. (I'll let you see them for yourself.) The bazooka is slow but deadly, often destroying 10 or so enemy's at a time with a well done shot. Thankfully, the author of this game introduced a hidden charging system to prevent spamming your bazooka. If you use your bazooka over and over the shots will take longer to do and will be weaker. This doesn't pose much of a problem however, and is very smoothly implemented. You won't really notice it unless your just using only your bazooka.
There are three other game play modes besides survival, but I won't spoil that for you. All I'll say about that is that the other modes are very fun and well done, and you probably won't be disappointed.
My only problem with the game play is the level design, or lack thereof. All the levels are practically the same. Thankfully that doesn't matter much in a game such like this, but it's something that could be improved.
Game play gets a perfect score. It's a great concept, and it's fun.
Story 4/6:
You're a viking. You have a bazooka. It's time to kick some butt.
...That's around it. I'm not to harsh on this however considering that it's an arcade game and that story doesn't really matter for this game.
This game receives an average score, this is something to improve for next game.
Interface 6/6:
The interface looks like an old DOS or arcade game, perfectly fitting for the rest of the game. The menu is simple, and it gets its job done well.
Interface receives a perfect score, it's simple and easy to navigate, and it fits in with the rest of the game.
Overall 6/6:
This game really set's the bar for old-school games made in game maker. I wish the game creator good luck, and happy game making!
