Mario Builder V11-1 Review
By krool on 21 December 2008

Pros: -Graphics are fantastic, like in SMB2,3,and World. -Sounds and Music are clear and there is a freedom to select whatever. -Clean physics. -Nice Builder Interface.

Cons: -Slow-downs. -Small bugs. -Lack of certain things (this con could easily be fixed)

Mario Builder is at Its Max Capacity

Mario Builder has been around for a long time, and I have followed it during its journey. It started out as a minuscule thing with few enemies, powerups, and options, and has now expanded to 14 power-ups, 10 (I think) bosses, dozens of enemies, and over a hundred different tile sets to choose from, not to mention the ability to upload your own.

Graphics - 5/5 - The graphics are wonderful. The SMA, SMA2, and SMA4 sprites blend nicely and look perfect. All animations are clean and don't look odd. Nothing could be improved with the graphics because they are perfect. Mario doesn't look perfect, but that can be easily solved with enhancements (which I am working on for other purposes but am willing to submit), but even without the enhancements, the graphics are so close to perfect that I couldn't dare give it a 4/5.

Sound/Music - 5/5 - The quality is great, and the selection is great, and, to top it all off, you can upload whatever music you want. Fantastic.

Gameplay - 5/5 - The physics are based on the Hello Engine, and both Hello's physics and yours are perfect. I must also combine gameplay with speed by saying while this may be the largest Mario Builder yet, it surprisingly is the fastest-running one yet (and although I got a Windows 7 computer for Christmas, this doesn't matter as I tested it on my crap XP computer that took 5 minutes to load Mario Builder 9-7, and now only 2 to load Mario Builder 10.

Story - 5/5 - Story is no longer non-applicable since you can make your own story! And that makes it a 5/5!

Interface/Selection - 4.5/5 - The builder interface is fantastic. I don't even think I have to talk much about it, because it just is fantastic. I don't like to talk about the selection of the builder because there are always new things that can be added, but I think this builder provides the best selection of things to choose from than other builders, mostly because it isn't random. For example, in SMBX, the level builder provides a clownship that you can ride. What? That is completely out of the blue, and the clownship belongs to Bowser, so how could Mario ride it? The builder provides so many things that are in actual mario games, but also a few custom things that aren't out of the blue. I still think that the giant enemies and Luigi are unnecessary, but I can't tell you to eliminate them after all of the effort put into them. The selection lacks here and there as well, but overall it is very good.

Overall - 4.75/5 (Can't do quarter-stars, so 5 it is!!!)

There are so many great things about Mario Builder, but with unnecessary things being added, the builder faced a minor downfall. But version 10 has saved it and now I think Ting Thing needs a well-deserved break. Mario Builder may finally be finished, and what better time to release the final than on Christmas?

I agree totally! Although I use SMBX too and it's great, this is a bit better.

Mario HAS his own clown car, but it isn't called clown car, and doesn't have a clown on it, but big letter M, and it's called hero car. It bwould be nice if MB had this feature, too.
