The Planetoid Review
By Naud on
11 July 2010
Pros: The planet/sun/gravity angine, building things, shooting asteroids with turrets, enemy tribes, rockets, multiple planets, shield
Cons: Not enough room to build, you don't see all of your population on your planet, sometimes rockets won't start, there could be more weapons, only 3 people in rocket so taking over a planet is hard, can't build houses on an empty planet, rocket's destination
The Planetoid
I like the engine with the planets who go around a sun. The circles around the sun are the orbits of the planets so you see how they move. That's made well.
I like building things on the planet, but there isn't much room. I build some solar centrals and some keldanium extractors so I have a positive production of both of them. But then I don't have many room left to build much houses.
When I build houses, I don't see as many people on my planet as the population I see in the screen I can show with x. That's why I sometimes can't put 3 people into a rocket and sometimes I can't launch the rocket when I set my destination. (I have some people in it, but I think the rocket can't start because there isn't anyone left, but I have more population :S)
The turrets who shoot asteroids automatically are good for defending your planet to asteroids, but I would like more weapons.
I like it that you can go to an enemy tribe with your rocket, but you can only have 3 people with you so you will lose from them I think.
I usually take over some empty planets to build some more solar centrals and keldanium extractors for more recourses. I couldn't build houses on an empty planet I took over so I was stuck with one guy.
The biggest problem with rockets is that when you pick a destiny for them, they will go to that exact point, not to the planet you are referring to. When the rocket has arrived on that point, the planet is gone. It's extremely difficult to predict where the planet will be when the rocket would arrive, because you don't know how fast the rocket goes to the planet.
It's cool that you can have multiple planets, but it's strange that all of your planets can use the same energy and keldanium. There should be different energy and keldanium levels for every planet. It should be transported with a transporter or something.
There should also be more kinds of rockets.
It would also be cool if you could build an army, so they can fight instead of the ordinary people. In many strategic games you can have workers and soldiers or something.
I like the shield, but it's using very much energy, so I have to build a lot of solar centrals. To build them I need a lot of keldanium. I actually got a lot of keldanium, because I had so many keldanium extractors. To get enough energy for them, I had to surround my whole planet with solar centrals. xD
A thing I don't like is that moving the map goes too slow, so moving from one planet to another goes to slow. You can better make that you can choose a planet in a list and that it will zoom in to that planet.
After a while the game gets boring. That's because my whole planet is full of solar centrals and keldanium extractors. I have to keep building solar centrals because otherwise the energy goes down, because keldanium extractors use 1 energy at a time. When the production is stable, I can launch a rocket to take over a planet. But like I said before the rocket can miss the planet and that's a loss of a few humans. Beating the aliens is difficult, because you can only sent a rocket with 3 people and they have to travel a long time so there's much in the way.
My conclusion is that it's a good game, 4/5
Many things are improved with Planetoid 2, I know.
