The co-operation in this game is represented by Perry's forced co-operation between his intellect, the urge to grow bigger to avoid being killed by the other pixels, and his instincts, the urge to prevent the growth as much as possible so he does not implode and die.

It may be a stretch, but it makes sense to me.
