sonic city 3 (updated) Review
By HousePlant on 04 January 2009

Pros: Old-school style gamplay, controls are fluent and responsive.

Cons: Rediculous level design. Sonic's gameplay is *too* fast. Knuckles's levels are long, confusing, and neither character has any checkpoints.

Close, but no Cigar...

All right, where should we start first? Hmm....

The level design needs some serious reworking. Pitfalls should not be the main challenge of the first few levels, especially if the pitfalls take five seconds for it to kill you. This wouldn't be too much of a problem if Sonic wasn't so freakin' fast. Sonic's third and final level is just insane. It took me three days worth of trying and retrying just to beat it. Why? Because of the poor level design. When you FINALLY get to the robots, it just pure luck trying to home them perfectly, especially when they start going vertically, considering they don't ever respawn, thus you either fall or have to kill yourself, then try the whole freakin' level all over again.

As for Knuckles, half the time I don't even know where I'm going because I come across this dead end and I assume that I have to glide across only to slowly decend into a pitfall. The first level has the worst first level design I've ever seen. Not only is it long without a single checkpoint, you have to injure yourself near the beginning in order to continue. Yeah, it is impossible to glide across to safety to the other wall, so you have to climb into the spike ball on the right side so that Knux will fall into a spring. I haven't made it past the second level, and personally, I don't want to.

Graphics are great. Advance/Battle sprites are used perfectly. The only thing that bothers me is that the level graphics are completely identical for every level. A little bit more enemy variety would be nice too. Also, why is the only power-up turbo? Overall, great job here.

Sound is okay, it serves its perpose. No comment here other than the music doesn't loop (that's what "sound_loop(index)" is for) and that Sonic has voice clips.

Now let's move on to gameplay. As I already stated, the level design needs huge reworking. But overall, it is good. Enemy variety and power-up variety is extremely limited (thank goodness you didn't put in the speed shoes O_O). The controls are great and responsive. The only thing that bugs me is that you continuously move in a direction after being hit even after hitting a wall, which sometimes leads to death. But if it weren't for the terrible level design this game would actually be enjoyable, for almost everything that makes it old-school is there: Loops, hills physics, etc. For things missing: Robotnik and his boss battles, Tails, level variety, power-up variety, intelligent level design, a good learning curve, and enemy variety.

There is no story within the game, so I don't know why Sonic would want to run across scaffoldings for no apparent reason. Why are there freaky-looking robots everywhere, yet Robotnik is nowhere to be found? Who knows?

The HUD also serves its purpose: Telling you how many rings and how much "turbo" you have. That's about all I can say on this one.

Overall, it wouldn't be so terrible if the level design wasn't so putrid and annoying. It is also lacking boss battles which would have been good. What could have been the greatest time I ever had playing a Sonic fan-game only left me frustrated and feeling as though I wasted my time.

@miyvrey team: I never said that "Robots - Robotnik = a bad thing." The only reason I gave the story a one star rating was because there was no story to begin with. During the review I just started talking about the level design then went down the line for star ratings.

@yvarthecreator: This is my review, thus MY opinion, and no person on Youtube is ever going to prove me otherwise. I will give the level design one credit though: It isn't a "Hold right to win" kind of game.

like, but, this is critical. many humans say it, that is is too hard! so choose.. make it hard on a another way.

otherwise, this review is a bit too serious too. the statements of this game are always being fast. because many people the first time wanted it faster, and faster and faster, is this. so if you wanna be ""slow" try the first one. even story, why should there be a reason for running? why should eggman always appear WITH his enemys? that is so completly stupid to discuss.. make fun!

yvar, whoever this human is, you know he is right. making a game what is such like this, is for many people frustrating, and not aviable to get to the end of the act. even if they did, they must go further in a amazing bigger and difficulter act. that is not in being good, but being bad. there may be in a game different "levels" for harder and funny`r gameplay, but this kind is (a way ) to far.

that people make vids about it, says nothing about it.they like it, so they wanna let see what they
