Baron Kart ALPHA Testing Review
By PaladinTrump on 07 February 2009

Pros: Stuff

Cons: Just read the Review

It took me 135 days before I did this review

When it comes to racing games, the monotony of computers and stages can be quite atrocious. Being forced to drive through the same route can be quite atrocious - especially if it's just a simple place, with or without slopes. This game presents itself above all of these negative factors though.

What makes this game so much more special?
Jumps, boost pannels, seperate islands, Computer AI capable of being hit and find a different route. This game does not have such monotony, with strange items as well. Even if computers aren't around to intercept you, you can (in an attempt to get the computers) obscure your own path.
The items also stop or allow others to get to other parts of the level. With all these unique factors - compared to a typical racing game - you can't get bored...easily.

Right, now it's time for the review:

This game, although incomplete has some huge potential. It's based Mario Kart's system and it uses a character someone else made (which now belongs to Yal) but it's differences make it great in many ways. Stage builder and Online play in which you can play other people's stages, it expands to an already expansive game.

This game has got great scenary. There's no destinct lighting (it's not cell shaded either) and there are many sprites in the stages but these are part of the charm of this game. The only partial issues are the backgrounds which don't seem to intwine with the stage properly.
The characters also have just 8 turning motions. This makes the game use up less data and therefore loads quicker and still makes the characters sprites look nice without trying to look 3D. Most sprites where made from scratch by Yal, but others are modifications of the Snes Mario Kart sprites - even Luigi was made to look drawn by Yal.
- Errors Mention: Backgrounds don't really seem to match the stages properly.

The layout of the stages can be really cool. As with all racing games, it's "follow the route", but this one is "follow the multiple splitting routes that can or may-not be on the same platform".
Theres an odd element in some later stages that seems to give it a platforming feel which is pretty unique, especially for a racing game. The only part I found quite anoying is, some computers could prevent you from finishing the stage with the "puddle" item and, being forced to reload Baron Kart after loading it for the first time and pressing "Maybe" for fun (the message is fun, it's just the fact you have to wait until Baron Kart reloads again, which can take some time).
Expanding on the "Maybe" message, sometimes you may find yourself pressing all the options on the menu, just to see what it says (on online play). Anything else I haven't commented on because the interface is the last thing that should be bothered with.
- Errors Mention: "You know what you doing"

Besides the nice generic Racing - game story line, it has one, and is a racing game.
The Game has nice sound effects and music would be nice. I haven't delved into them, so I can't comment on them yet until you write some more info.

And now, it's the part of the review you've all been waiting for (except that guy) the Game itself!
The Game can be pretty random with the items and the multiple routes in [i]most[i] stages can keep you bussy for a while. The problem with the stages is, this game's trademark stages (the ones with the many jumps and platforms which have a destinct route) can be quite tedious for most players; myself not included. I love those stages, but there aren't really enough simple courses (two more simple stages would be nice, to stop the anoying complaints).
As you drive through the stages, looking at the croud and trees pass the characters, you can't help but to stop and admire the on stage scenary of the game (litterally - I did that twice without noticing). The way you implimented the computer's AI is nice as well, but it would be better if you made the turn in the direction of the path, instead of change into that direction. NTL, the computer's AI is really cool.
The stage builder itself is nice and allows the user to play whatever stages the are content with playing. There may be a few errors that will become obsolete but the game's really nice.
Sorry, but once again It was anoying to find faults to help improve so I needed to pinpoint small ones
- Errors that I consider: I'll redo this part after thoughrough playing - there were too few.

This game has some real potential. It's almost got full marks, and it's still incomplete. With a little more work, this game could turn out to be perfect. With a little alteration on the music used, this game could leave memorable stages in the player's head. 4/5
