This is an example for making buttons that can be applied to any situation, there are four kinds of buttons here:
Normal Buttons that do stuff when the left mouse button is released

Held-down Buttons, that do stuff while the left mouse button is pressed

Toggle buttons that toggle a variable between 0 and 1 when its clicked

Slider Bars that assign a value to a variable by dragging the mouse across the button.

All of these can be highly useful, and this template means that you just add the correct object into a room and assign values to variables in its creation code. The game info goes much more in-depth.
