tripod- survival Review

Pros: Graphics; Gameplay

Cons: Length of play

A simple arcade game

Darth Marus has made an exectionally good arcade style game here with Tripod Survival. The aim is to control a machine set for battle called the AMLT, Armored Mobile Lazer Tripod, and to test its endurance against the robotic drones.
The gameplay is easy with clear instructions on how to play. You simply click where you want to shoot. Although that may sound easy, you can't actually see the cursor and the only indication to where you will shoot is where the AMLT's head is facing and where you are, or had already shot.
You send out bursts of energy which heats up your laser, and if you shoot for too long then there will be about five seconds of waiting until it cools down. This is easily avoided and all you need to do is send out bursts with short intermissions in between.
There is not a lot else to explain about this game. It is very short and the gameplay only changes when more drones come along, and there is only one type of drone, and they are destroyed with one hit which makes strategy simple.
But the graphics of Tripod Survival is great for a short game, the texture and the shading, but what is good is the tripod itself. The movement of the AMLT looks complicated for the legs step like a living animal, but really the legs just follow the head, which is what you control. This makes the gameplay much more enjoyable. The sounds which go with it are plain but practable, and the level music is a familar Metroid theme, except arranged.
I think that this game has much more potential then just an arcade game. It has been left open for another game to follow for it has an explaination that the AMLT will be sent on a mission after testing, and I would be surprised if Darth Marus doesn't make a sequel which takes the game into the genre of Action and Adventure. A good job for a game made in one day.
