Coldgearz Review
By Me_the_V on 18 January 2011

Pros: Good-ish graphics Evocative of "old-school" MEGA DIFFICULTY.

Cons: Gameplay consists of shooting things in their back. Multiple grammar issues (if you aren't a natural speaker, have somebody spot-check stuff for you) Evocative of "old-school" MEGA DIFFICULTY. Multiple occasions saw spinners get stuck in the wall.

Classic? Hmmm...

I played this game two years ago (or it feels that way) and I decided to play it again when I saw Andy's sig.

I remember thinking it was great and cool back then...but I hope Andy could redo this game ten times better by now.

Let's cover my ratings first:
Graphics are cool, pixelated, but nothing special. Average for pixel art, but good for a GM game...but that doesn't get it off the hook.

Sound...meh. Good effects, but not really, again, anything SPECIAL

Gameplay: Not good...surprisingly. I thought I remembered something better. You can't shoot things when they are shooting at you, or you lose much of your precious health. You can't duck, so you are left to position yourself in the best position and shoot robots in their backs when they are far enough away so that they don't see you...meh. Multiple glitches with spinners hindered the game, too. Shotgun is imbalanced, machine gun is not strong enough, nor is the sniper rifle. Unnecessarily difficult! Mostly due to the bad gameplay.

Story: Gotta say, not the best. I only got to the base, but I don't like the execution from the beginning, which is what I will judge my review on. It was futuristic rogue robots...not much to say...and spelling issues and their kin hinder the story...like a five-year-old tells it. "Its to hard, likely do to"...there's an example, not a quote.

Interface? Huh. Good. It was easy to see that you were going to fail pretty hard. Nothing new or innovative, wish I knew how large my magazine was for the pistol.

There are lots of hindrances to the gameplay...and since a game is something you play, that doesn't bode well. You CAN'T fight the way you WANT to, face to face in a firefight. It's not possible.
Saves are infrequent. I don't want to walk all the way from the beginning for thirty seconds.

A bright spot: the bosses are good.

I understand that it's supposed to be "hard," but hard for hardness' sake doesn't mean anything...it's why games got too easy. A policy reversal was needed...this game needs more ease. It really punishes you and eats your time, and I refused to play longer...I realize that makes my review largely illegitimate, but I just couldn't stick with it any longer... That speaks for itself.

Maybe if a feature was included to go back to ANY level you've cleared, and see if you can "regain" lives by replaying it. At the rate I was dying I fail to see how the game went on much longer.

The menu and saves system could use some work, too...ONE save? Really...I wish I had more.

I know this review is pretty negative, but I find it easier to focus on what NEEDS fixing. It's a good try Andy, and it is a "GN Classic," though I'm not sure it's good enough to be one without a few tweaks.

I enjoyed this review. Looking back there are many flaws with Coldgearz. The AI is highly flawed and everything feels repetitive. I should have also added a scoreboard and multiple save files. I hope to one day make a new Coldgearz patch adding a scoreboard. Maybe it could be released beside a brand new Coldgearz 2 running on a fresh engine? Right now I am working on other projects though - so that will have to wait. ;) Again - thank you for the nice review!
