Spirits of Metropolis Review
By The_Prodigy on 08 January 2009

Pros: Obviously a well constructed game. Nice sound, great gameplay, perfect graphics, and a really professional looking interface. All around an awesome game maker game.

Cons: Nothing

A cool game with an even cooler display

I think this is probably one of the best puzzle games I've played. Not just one of the best puzzle games in game maker, but in all puzzle games. It is simple, fun, and has plenty of extra features to keep you entertained as you get further into the game. Most of all, it's pretty original. I don't recall playing another puzzle game like it.

The whole game comes across as being really polished and professional. A nice looking menu is something that even most of the really fun game maker games tend to lack, but which this game provides. That, on top of graphics and sound effects that fit together perfectly, would have made the game look pretty impressive even if the gameplay was boring.

One thing that makes a good game that I don't think a lot of people realize, is the player's ability to just jump in and be able to figure everything out intuitively. What I mean is, everything in the game made sense. I didn't have to spend a bunch of time figuring out any weird little quirks. Everything did what I expected it to do. An example of a game maker game which could have been a lot more fun if it was more intuitive is Planetoid 2.

I give this game a 4 out of 5 because even though it was perfectly displayed, in the end what matters most is the gameplay. Although the game was pretty damn enjoyable, it's still just a puzzle game, and all puzzle games lack the depth to be that amazing. I guess you may disagree if you really love puzzle games, but to me the only one which I will ever consider a classic is Tetris. Also, puzzles just tend to be more fun when implemented into some other genre of game, like Zelda.

EDIT: Taking into account all the extra features, this game deserves a 5 out of 5. But I still stand by my opinion that a 5 out of 5 for a puzzle game isn't as good as a 5 out of 5 for an RPG or Action game. They're just too simple to be as amazing.
