      I think you misunderstood the game. That isn't a targeting site, it's your ship. And after you're hit three times you have lost all your lives. The meaning of the game is to use the gravity the ship has to lead the asteroids out of the screen (or bash them against each other) without touching them. You don't shoot them.

      That was pretty cool; however, it seems that always after I destroy a third asterod, the targeting-site is gone. Then, I can't fire any more and the game eventually would end.
