There's a bit of a nack to pressing the buttons. Always keep in mind that tapping keys will almost always do absolutely nothing! You have to press the button and hold it for about 1 and a half seconds, if that doesn't work let go and try again! (This is completely game maker dodginess, I have been trying to fix this glitch since I first started the game last year!)
