The Second Genius

Hibachi Chef Review
By The Second Genius on 26 June 2009

Pros: Good idea, excellent music and sound effect, difficulty curve was not too steep or too shallow, story was very inventive.

Cons: Not to be harsh, but the graphics sucked, the interface took a little getting used to, much too short

Japanese Cooking Meets Guitar Hero

Hibachi Chef is, too say the least, a very unusual game. Take the button pressing song playing action of Guitar Hero and mix it with Japanese cooking. Well it most certainly is creative, the story is a little lacking. This is one of the craziest games I've ever seen, the least it could have is some kind of intro. The graphics were downright awful. They looked like a blind chipmunk with one arm and epilepsy drew them. At least they were semi-recognizable, and I could tell what object they were supposed to look like. The exception was the logo, which looked great. On the flipside, the sound was near perfect. The music was great, and that nice touch of doing a Through The Fire And Flames remix for the last level really made the game better. The sound effects were all good, except for that one on the last two levels where the angry Japanese guy shouts something about teriyaki. The biggest problem was the interface though. Where did the idea to use F1-F4 come from? Those have got to be the four worst keys you could have possibly picked. They're way at the top of the keyboard, and on laptops they're about half the size of regular keys. Eek!% of the times I lost it was because of some screwup with the keys. Additionally, the game could have been much longer. Not more songs/foods neccessarily, but longer songs/foods. The last one didn't even ride out the intro to Through The Fire And Flames, and I was looking forward to hearing the rest of that song. The songs/foods themselves were well done in matters of difficulty. They didn't suddenly jump up in level of difficulty or have one song be pretty much the same thing as another one. Overall, Hibachi Chef is a great game, but it could probably be better with a few simple changes like the interface and a little more substance to it. Still good though.

The two levels at the end were both from the Iron Cook venue.

So thats what he said. But why did he say it on the second to last level too?

The Japanese guy says "Iron Cook"! It was on an episode of Futurama, so I thought it would be funny to put it on the Iron Chef level. As for the keys, I got that from Guitar Master. And the graphics, yeah I'll give you that, I was gonna have someone work on them because I suck at spriting, but they never did.
