Yes, press Q when the icon appears in the corner of the screen. If your hands are full, you have to drop whatever you're carrying with E.

Love the graphics and general atmosphere, but can't really get used to the gameplay.
Also, is it possible to pick things up?

nice graphics, very original. i think swinging the sword should kill that shadow guy.
