Platform X Review

Pros: -Nice graphics -Excellent presentation (and polish)
Cons: -Not so good gameplay -Odd controls
Above average; good effort.
-Graphics: The high point of the game. Each level is done in a different style, with walls and enemies that change almost every level. The style is sort of like 8-bit games, except for the backgrounds (some of them look like they're taken from the resource packs; pity) Excellent work overall, Segun. 5 stars.
-Sound. None, but no sound is better than really annoying sound; 2 stars is what I always give in these cases.
-Story: See sound. I consider a story less essential than sound, except in adventure games, so you get 3 stars. Plus, the different styles in each level make it feel like you're making progress (so a very basic story
)
-Gameplay: I didn't get the point of this game. There's a score display on the top of the screen, so I assume you're meant to collect as many points as possible, but resetting the game (which I had to do several times) resets your score too. And there's no point trying to beat all the levels, since you can simply skip forwards to the next one at any time. And yes, I did play through to the end; some of the cheats don't work (the "evil god boss" causes an error when you get the gun). Having said that, the game is still quite long, and there's a good deal of effort put into the level design, so 2 stars instead of 1.
Interface: 1 star. It has bugs in it, especially when walking on a slope or riding a moving platform; there is the aforementioned error; and the controls are bizarre. I need one hand on the arrow keys to move, one on the Ctrl and Shift keys to jump and teleport, and one on the mouse to shoot stuff. Why can't I just jump with Up? And if the slope programming doesn't work, why did you leave it in?
Overall: I give you 3 stars. It's above average when compared to all the Pong clones on Yoyo, and there is, I'll admit, more effort put into the menus and level selection than in my games, so well done there. However, it's just not as fun as it could be, mainly due to the interface. This game could easily be 4-5 stars on all counts if the movement bugs were fixed and make the levels were unlocked as you beat them, instead of all being unlocked at the start.
And it is a fun game if you can overlook those small issues. ![]()
