Acceleration Review

Pros: Nice game engine, stylish, great music
Cons: limited gameplay, no real objective
It's Snake.... in space!
As soon as I started playing Acceleration, something seemed oddly familiar about it. Wireframe graphics invoke memories of classic Asteroids, only you're not shooting at anything. Gameplay involves you flying around collecting various pickups, with most of them speeding your ship up to the point where you lose control.
2 minutes in and with a score over 500, it suddenly dawned on me that I was actually playing a snake game! Sure, you're not a snake and you don't have a tail to avoid but the game mechanic is basically the classic collect-a-pill and repeat.
The game has some good ideas but needs more work to make it essential. The game engine is great, graphics, sound and presentation are all exactly right for the game but sadly it's the overall experience that lacks. You get three levels to play and get a high score on but that is as far as the gameplay seems to extend.
This would get a 4* from me with very little effort. Add in more maps to play in, give the option to make your ship wrap around the level (perhaps drop points if the player does this to give them incentive not to?), add more play modes (try a second mode where the mines can move by themselves!) and perhaps have the points-value change depending on how long it takes you to get to the pickup?

Thanks. I'll see what I can do.
