Squwanki mod 1 Review
By Phlum on

Pros: Nice selection of weapons, good engine, the graphics weren't bad, and the name.
Cons: It needs better documentation. You press 1, and a string of message boxes come up. That's not helpful. Instead, try having a small box that shows up while you hold 1, and then you can easily refer to it. The other buttons should deal with the other stuff
Squwanki Odd...
First of all, how did you come up with that totally random name? What does it mean?
Anyway, the review itself. This game, or map editor, was good, but could be improved on a lot. A whole lot.
It's a strange thing, this. I can't tell what I'm doing half the time, and yet it's quite good. I'll explain further.
The game starts out shoving a bunch of message boxes in your face to tell you the 'controlls'. This is a pain, because I'd rather just start the game than have to continually wade through these textboxes. Also, the logo, if you'd call it that, was ugly and pixelated.
When you get to the menu, you see a nice screenshot of what you're about to encounter. It could be blurred, though, to make it look nicer and more menu-y. The buttons weren't that great; red pixelly writing on board a square grey box. Not pretty stuff, but functional.
When you choose to play, you get some information; you're told something about each of the maps that you can edit. Also, it tells you that you can press 9 to learn how to pronounce Squwanki, but that doesn't work. The 'build new' button is incredibly obscure as it is in the bottom-left corner where you'd expect the 'Back' button to be. Also, next to the map info, you're given the option to 'load'. I'm not sure what that does particularly.
Upon clicking 'Build New', you are given the choice of Map 1 or 2. I just chose 2, and I got a message box. Ugh.
So, the mapeditor was really confusing. I pressed 1, only to find...guess what?...MORE MESSAGE BOXES. I tried pressing random buttons, but I got a load of seemingly random pictures which meant nothing to me. A key would have sufficed. I tried the arrow keys, and from behind a huge stone square came a red dot, which is the cursor. So, when I ran the game, I had a random ceiling in front of me and I was holding a pistol, plus there were a load of random objects including guys, boxes and radios.
It needs better documentation. You press 1, and a string of message boxes come up. That's not helpful. Instead, try having a small box that shows up while you hold 1, with a key, and then you can easily refer back to it. The other buttons should deal with the other stuff in the same manner.
Also, in the documentation you should have explained how to use the map editor. I was confused by it until I started slapping my keyboard in search of a way to actually choose what I was placing. A solution would be to either have on-the-fly editing, or better still, mouse editing. Then you could right-click to select an object, or select it from the aforementioned menu.
But, aside from all the cons, it has a really good engine. It runs smoothly on my incredibly dated laptop, and the game has a nice selection of weapons from SMGs to a fridge transformer gun to a pointless radio which I can only assume you click, and the people die of sploded eardrums. But I can't tell.
I haven't played GMod, or Smarty Lab, but this game has a good engine, but is let down by poor documentation and a slew of message boxes.

Indeed this is a good review, though it may put people off. And while this game has minor flaws, it is still brilliant, and its modding community should be larger.

Well like all level editors it takes time to get used to, and the randomness is what is left over after making cartoonland 2.
