Ruthless Review

Pros: If you hate yourself and enjoy puzzle platformers, this is for you

Cons: Frustrating from the first step you take

I wanna be the quester

This is yet another game where the creator delights in killing and surprising the player as much as possible. You have only to take a step towards the goal and something jumps out to kill you. It is a game of trial and error, of death and memorization, until you finally get far enough to breach the creator's psych. Now, with that said:

The graphics were boring, low fidelity, simple and only consisted of three colors. However, they got the point across and were usable enough. 2/5

The sound that was there was fitting, but as a whole it felt rather inadequate. Also, and this is such a minor contrivance that it should be written off, the sound for the blood being shot out is too low in pitch to resemble the rate at which blood spurts out. All in all, nothing special. 3/5

The gameplay is very efficient and smooth, as far as platformers go. Yet, it was riddled with frustration at every corner as something hidden spooked and subsequently killed you. One of the golden rules of Game Making is that the player is not the enemy. A good game makes it feel like the player just didn't do good enough in a loss---not that the game was too tricky or cheats. I wanna be the guy gained popularity for being the first game to starkly contrast this rule, but that doesn't mean it was a good thing or should have clones. Smooth, but uses trickery and is unoriginal. 2/5

If there was a story, you have to get much farther in the game than I bothered to find it. 1/5

There was not an interface either, except for the directions which were clear and simple spelled out on the wall. Nothing wrong per se, but nothing special either. 3/5

Overall, I came away unimpressed and frustrated. 2/5
