Mario goes Retro! (scrapped) Review

Pros: Lots of things in this game (map screen, secret areas, buyable items and characters at the shop, bosses at the end of every level (almost), mini-games and I probably forget some...)
Cons: The mix of graphics from different systems gets annoying, Mario is slow even when running, no real ending, the life system
A nice game
This game bring some good ideas like a shop where we can buy new playable characters and some more things. The game covers a lot of Mario eras, which is a good idea also. I like the music, even if it is Midi (don't know for sure).
Some backgrounds are annoying. It is difficult to tell where there is ground. Levels are pretty well done but some power-ups are unreachable. Probably intended.
One thing that I find weird is the life system. There is no life system at all. When Mario lose a life, he gets to restart the level with the power-ups he had instead of restarting the level (or area of the level) from the start. Also, if Super Mario or Fire Mario touch an enemy, he loses his life. It's probably intended but I find it weird. Another thing. If lives are infinite, why are there 1-up shrooms?
Every level has a boss at the end. This is cool. But when we get killed, we restart where we were with the boss instead of restarting the boss level. That goes with life system I suppose... One interesting boss is that race with the king. This race is awesome. I got killed a lot but I loved that level. The only problem I have with it is that when Mario get killed by anything but the king, he gets to restart the level while the king is way out of reach. We have to wait 'til the king finishes the race or give up with Esc. A little annoying but the level compensates.
The controls are good but they could be a little better. And Mario should go faster... I found him slow even while running with J...
I never saw an ending to the game and I played it a few hours. It's sad. But I read that the game is unfinished and the original file was lost, so that explains it.
Overall, a good game that could have had a higher grade if finished.

There is a life system, sorta. The number of times you die affect the score at the end. The 1-up Mushrooms decreases the number of deaths by 1. If you havent died yet, it'll activate as soon as you will.
I'm not good in the platform game area, though I'm quite proud of the engine I made in The Inverted L.
Thanks for the review.
