I used a grid data structure to keep track of which spaces had been uncovered, and used tiles to draw black boxes. I'm pretty sure Nailog has an example of a tactics game.

It's too bad. This is more downrating than I've seen in a competition before. While I'm not really a fan of arcade games (btw, this is an arcade game), I found this game to be a lot of fun and couldn't find anything about it lacking. 5/5 from me. Good luck!

The treasure chests are placed randomly when the room is created. If you were to open them, then leave and come back, the game would remember that they had been opened, but not where they were located.
